North Wales, and particularly the border towns have a
long and eventful history. Mold's Welsh name.Yr Wyddgrug
is derived from the Welsh for heap, tomb or memorial. The English
name for the town is thought to come from the name of the Norman
Lords who built Bailey Hill and Bailey Castle on the edge of
the town. Their name was Montalt which is similar to Mons Altus
the Latin for high mount.
Buckley to the Northwest has a population of approximately fifteen
thousand and has long been an important centre for potteries, brickworks
and coal mines. Buckley's bricks are known across the world and
are celebrated in a series of sculptures.
Flint whilst being well known for the coal mining is also home
to Flint Castle. The castle dates back to the 13th Century and
has enjoyed a colourful history over the years. Like Mold and Buckley,
Flint has played host to commerce and history and though most of
the heavy industry has left the area, other modern businesses have
moved in to take their place.
